I am blessed

Currently, I am taking HIST 111 – Introduction to Historical Study.  Here is a description of the course per the SVSU website:

A survey of historical methodology emphasizing research aids and techniques, writing skills and historical analysis. As a course in the Written Communication category of the General Education Program, HIST 111 assists students in developing greater proficiency in writing effective, researched academic texts in the English language.

In other words, this class isn’t about the actual history being presented; it’s about how history was recorded and by whom.  Our class is focusing on Middle Eastern history because that’s what our teacher is getting her masters in.  Despite it being only a 100-level class, there is a ridiculous amount of reading—some of it interesting, some of it not.  Anyway, currently I am reading Persian Mirrors: The Elusive Face of Iran by Elaine Sciolino.  In addition to being extremely frustrated with the content of this book and the ruling class of men in Iran, it has made me realize just how blessed I really am.

I thank God that I was born in the United States and not in Iran.  I thank God that I live in a country of freedom.

I can wear whatever I choose—I can be frumpy or sexy or casual or whatever.  It’s MY choice.  I am not forced to wear a chador.  In Iran, women are forced to keep their hair covered and wear loose fitting clothing to keep the shape of their bodies hidden when they are in public.  Why?  Because it would be wrong for men to look at them lustfully.  So, women are punished for the sins of men.  [If I couldn’t wear jeans, I don’t know what I’d do.]

I can listen to music and dance to it, if I so choose.  I can talk to men who are not my relatives.  I can have a beer now and then.  I can speak freely about whatever I choose without the fear of execution or imprisonment.

If I learn nothing else from History 111, I have learned that I have more blessings than I can count.
